4 Methods to Install MIUI Theme MTZ Files 1

This article shows you 4 tricks to install MIUI themes downloaded from third-parties. Xiaomi prevents its ordinary users to import theme's MTZ files directly on their Mi, Redmi, or Redmi Note phones. This limitation has been placed since MIUI 10 and hence MIUI 11 still inherits such a restriction.

How to hack the Mi Themes restriction? There are 4 workarounds you can try. You can choose which one is the easiest one for you.

One of my favorite features available on Xiaomi phones running its default skinned Android mobile OS is the support for custom themes. Therefore, we can change and customize the looks and feels of the user interface (UI). That said, the themes can enhance our overall experience in using the device.

Enough with the chit chat, let's dive into the main course of this article: The tricks on installing MIUI themes .MTZ file.

#1 – Using MIUI Theme Editor App

Let us start from the very easiest trick, using the MIUI Theme Editor app. The main purpose of the app is to help MIUI users create and customize themes for MIUI. However, the app also allows you to import and use MIUI themes downloaded from third-party.

This is the easiest method. However, there is one drawback. The applied theme usually reverts back to normal after rebooting. Since this method is the easiest one, you'll lose nothing to try it.

Download MIUI Theme Editor:

Simply launch the Play Store app on your phone, search for MIUI Theme Editor, and then install it.

Prefer to have its APK file? You can also download MIUI Theme Editor APK file from below direct link:

File name :
com.mixapplications.miuithemeeditor_1.7.3-50.apk

Version 1.7.3 | 22371 downloads | Size: 12 MB

How to Install MIUI Themes?

  1. Download the theme's .mtz file to your phone.
  2. Install the MIUI Theme Editor app above.
  3. Tap on the [Browse] button in the app.
  4. Find the MTZ file, tap on it to select it.
  5. Tap [OK].
  6. Tap [Next], then [Finish].
  7. Wait a moment.
  8. A message will pop up, choose [Install], then tap [OK].
  9. Go back to the home screen then open the Themes Manager app.
  10. Go to My Account or My Page then Themes.
  11. Choose the newly imported theme.
  12. Tap the [Apply] button, and enjoy!

A similar app that allows you to import MTZ files is Mi Rape. The app is even more powerful than MIUI Theme Manager. Unfortunately, Mi Rape is not under rapid development.

#2 – Using Xiaomi Designer Account

The second method is basically the official way. Xiaomi restricts the ability to import themes except for registered Designer Accounts. Hence, the official way to bypass this restriction is of course by registering a Designer Account.

  1. Go to http://designer.xiaomi.com/ page.
  2. Log in with your Xiaomi account or Sign up if you don't have one.
  3. Upload one new MIUI theme(*) by clicking the Green button.
  4. Proceed as displayed on-screen instruction.
  5. Go to Settings >> Accounts >> Mi Accounts.
  6. Make sure you use the same Mi Account as the Designer account.
  7. Open the Themes manager app.
  8. Go to My Account (or My Page) > Themes > Import.
  9. Install any MIUI themes .MTZ file.
  10. Enjoy!

(*) What if you don't have a new theme for upload? Find any MIUI theme .MTZ file, edit in in the Theme Editor app and repack it with a new name. Make sure you edit its name and add some distinctive features (change a few icons, colors, etc.).

#3 – Using a Custom MIUI ROM

Custom ROMs built based on MIUI usually come with a patched Themes Manager app. Xiaomi.eu, MIUI Pro, and Mi Room are three known ROMs having patched Themes manager app.

Inevitably, you'll need to unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP recovery, and flash the custom ROM of your choice. Need a recommendation? We suggest you go with Xiaomi.eu ROM which is a custom ROM based on MIUI China. Xiaomi.eu has its own active community and is rapidly developed.

Simply flash the ROM, open the Themes Manager, and import any MIUI themes .mtz files you want.

#4 – Using Patched Themes Manager App

Don't want to flash a custom ROM? Don't worry! There is another solution although this still requires you to unlock bootloader and TWRP custom recovery.

Instead of replacing the whole operating system, you can root it and replace only the MIUI Themes Manager app with the patched on.

Simply download and install the patched MIUI Themes Manager app on your phone. Once installed, use the Themes Manager app to import the MTZ files of your choice and you're good to go.

Please remember! This trick needs you to root your phone with Magisk.

Conclusion

The official Themes Manager app provides a bunch of both free and paid themes to customize the looks and feels of your MIUI phones. However, some cool MIUI themes usually unlisted in the Themes store repository. Hence, you have to manually install it on your phone.

There are 4 tricks to install MIUI theme manually. All of them have their own level of difficulties and some advantages and disadvantages. In the end, it's all up to you to choose.

If your phone is rooted, we suggest you go with the last method.
